Increase of a surface's activity by removal or chemical reaction of inactive material on the surface. Examples are the removal of metal surface oxides or the generation of polar groups on polyolefins. In many cases, an activation is a necessity for a following coating process to provide a sufficient wetting and adhesion of the coating. Plasma activation constitutes the most versatile activation method. Other methods are e. g. flame treatment, corona or chemically activating baths.
