(Symbol Al) silver-white light metal with high electric and heat conductivity. In contact with air, Al forms a thin transparent oxide layer which is stable at neutral pH values and protects the metal from further oxidation. Alkaline solutions and many acids corrode the oxide and the metal. Al powder is inflammatory. Aluminium is the most widely used light metal, it is applied in foil, profiles and moulded parts. Al surfaces can be activated by means of a plasma.
