Layers designed to suppress the permeation of liquids and gases into or through a solid, respectively. Barrier layers can be produced by plasma polymerisation based on e. g. fluoropolymers or SiO2. Important applications are barrier layers against water, oxygen and CO2 in food packaging as well as against hydrocarbons in fuel tanks and leads.
