Copper surfaces in micro-electronic applications have to be perfectly clean before joining processes such as bonding and soldering to provide optimal wetting by the solder and electrical contacting. Thus, copper contacts are often pretreated in electronic industry prior to the contacting step by plasma to clean them from surface oxide and organic compounds.
